How Work Hours Are Calculated
Each shift's duration is found by subtracting the start time from the end time, then deducting any break time. This calculator handles both individual shifts and full weekly timesheets, converting the result into both clock format (hours and minutes) and decimal format (useful for payroll systems).
Overnight shifts — where the end time is earlier than the start time — are automatically handled by adding 24 hours to the end time, so a shift from 10 PM to 6 AM correctly calculates as 8 hours. How Overtime Is Calculated
Overtime is automatically calculated when total hours exceed 8 hours in a single day (Multiple Shifts mode) or 40 hours in a week (Weekly Timesheet mode). The overtime rate defaults to 1.5× your regular rate if no custom rate is entered, though this is only a common convention — actual overtime rules vary significantly by country, industry and individual employment agreement.
- United States. Federal law (FLSA) generally requires 1.5× pay after 40 hours in a week for non-exempt employees, though daily overtime rules vary by state.
- Australia. Overtime rules depend on the applicable Award or Enterprise Agreement — often time-and-a-half for the first few hours, then double time.
- UK. No statutory overtime rate — entirely dependent on the employment contract, though many employers voluntarily offer 1.5× or more.
- Always check your specific contract or local labour law — this calculator provides a general estimate using the common 1.5× convention, not a legal determination.
