How Work Hours Are Calculated
Each shift duration is calculated by subtracting the start time from the end time. Break time is then deducted. Overnight shifts — where the end time is earlier than the start time — are automatically handled by adding 24 hours to the end time.
Total Hours = (End Time − Start Time) − Break Time
For example a shift from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute break = 8 hours worked.
How Overtime Is Calculated
Overtime is automatically calculated when total hours exceed 8 hours in a single day (shifts mode) or 40 hours in a week (weekly mode). The overtime rate defaults to 1.5x your regular rate if no custom rate is entered — though overtime rules vary by country and employer.
Who Uses a Timesheet Calculator?
Timesheet calculators are used by employees tracking hours for payroll, freelancers calculating billable time, managers verifying staff hours, contractors tracking project time and anyone on an hourly rate who needs an accurate total.
FAQs
How do I calculate total work hours?
Subtract your start time from your end time then deduct any break time. For multiple shifts add each shift duration together. This calculator does it all automatically — just enter your times and click Calculate.
Does this calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes — if your end time is earlier than your start time the calculator automatically treats it as an overnight shift spanning into the next day.
How is overtime calculated?
Overtime applies after 8 hours in a single shift or 40 hours in a weekly timesheet. The calculator uses 1.5x your regular rate as the default overtime rate — you can enter a custom overtime rate if yours differs.
Can I use this for payroll calculations?
Yes — enter your hourly rate and the calculator shows your total pay including regular and overtime pay. Always verify with your employer or payroll system as overtime rules vary.
How many shifts can I add?
Up to 7 shifts in Multiple Shifts mode. For a full week use the Weekly Timesheet mode which covers Monday to Sunday.
