How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and situation. Here are general guidelines:

Excellent service — 20-25%

Good service — 15-18%

Average service — 10-15%

Poor service — 0-10% at your discretion

Delivery drivers — 10-15% of the order value

Hotel housekeeping — $2-5 per night

Tipping is most expected in the United States where service staff often rely on tips as a significant part of their income. In Australia and the UK tipping is appreciated but less expected.

How Is a Tip Calculated?

A tip is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax bill amount. Multiply your bill by the tip percentage divided by 100 to get the tip amount, then add it to the bill for the total.

Formula: Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)

For example: $65 bill with 18% tip = $65 × 0.18 = $11.70 tip = $76.70 total

FAQs

How do I split a bill with tip between people?

Add the tip to the total bill first then divide by the number of people. For example a $65 bill with 18% tip = $76.70 total ÷ 4 people = $19.18 each. The calculator does this automatically.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax bill amount. However tipping on the post-tax amount is also acceptable and increasingly common in the US.

What is the standard tip at a restaurant?

In the US 15-20% is considered standard for good service. In the UK and Australia 10-15% is typical but less expected. In many Asian countries tipping is not customary.

Do I need to tip if a service charge is already included?

If a service charge is already included in your bill you don’t need to add an additional tip. Check your bill carefully for any service charge or gratuity line.
