How Is Percentage Increase Calculated?
Percentage increase measures how much a value has grown relative to its original amount. The formula is:
Percentage Increase = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100
For example if a salary increases from £30,000 to £33,000 the percentage increase is ((33,000 − 30,000) ÷ 30,000) × 100 = 10%
Common Uses for Percentage Increase
Percentage increase is used for salary raises, price increases, investment returns, population growth, revenue growth and any situation where a value has grown over time.
FAQs
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value then multiply by 100. For example (125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25% increase.
What is the difference between percentage increase and absolute increase?
Absolute increase is the raw difference between two values. Percentage increase expresses that difference as a proportion of the original value. A £500 raise on a £5,000 salary is a 10% increase. The same £500 on a £50,000 salary is only 1%.
Can percentage increase be more than 100%?
Yes — if a value doubles that is a 100% increase. If it triples that is a 200% increase.
