The Percentage Formula

The basic formula for calculating a percentage is:

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

This formula is used to determine what portion one number represents compared to another.

For example, if you scored 45 points out of 60 on a test, the percentage would be calculated like this:

45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%

This means you achieved 75 percent of the total possible score.

Common Uses for Percentage Calculations

Percentages are used in everyday life for calculating discounts and sale prices, working out tax amounts, understanding interest rates on savings and loans, reading statistics and data, calculating tips, measuring score percentages and tracking changes over time.

Multiply the number by the percentage then divide by 100. For example 20% of 150 = 150 × 20 ÷ 100 = 30. Or simply use the What is X% of Y tab above.

Divide the part by the total then multiply by 100. For example 30 out of 150 = 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20%. Use the X is what % of Y tab above.

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. For example from 100 to 135 = (135 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 35% increase.

Both use the same formula. A percentage increase means the new value is higher than the original. A percentage decrease means the new value is lower.
