What Is a Conversion Rate?

A conversion rate measures the percentage of people who take a desired action out of the total who had the opportunity. It could be website visitors who make a purchase, leads who become customers, calls that result in bookings, or any measurable outcome from a set of attempts.

Formula: Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Total Attempts) × 100

For example if 35 out of 1,000 website visitors make a purchase the conversion rate is 3.5%.

What Is a Good Conversion Rate?

It depends on the industry but general benchmarks are:

E-commerce — 1% to 4% is typical, above 4% is excellent

Lead generation — 2% to 5% is average, above 8% is strong

SaaS and software — 5% to 10% is considered good

Sales calls — 20% to 30% is typical for warm leads
