What Are Exponents?

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself. Written as base^exponent — for example 2³ means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. The base is the number being multiplied and the exponent is how many times to multiply it.

Special Exponent Rules

Any number to the power of 0 = 1 — for example 5⁰ = 1

Any number to the power of 1 = itself — for example 7¹ = 7

Negative exponents = reciprocal — for example 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8

Fractional exponents = roots — for example 4^0.5 = √4 = 2

FAQs

An exponent is the small raised number that tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself. In 2³ the base is 2 and the exponent is 3 meaning 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.

A negative exponent means the reciprocal of the positive version. For example 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8 = 0.125.

Any number raised to the power of 0 equals 1. For example 99⁰ = 1.

Squaring a number is raising it to the power of 2. Cubing is raising it to the power of 3. So 5² = 25 and 5³ = 125.
