What the Research Says About Age Gaps
There is no single worldwide "average age gap" that accurately represents every country, age group and relationship type. Official data for England and Wales found that in 2021, 31.1% of opposite-sex married couples and 33.7% of cohabiting couples had an age difference of five years or more. The proportions were different for same-sex marriages and civil partnerships.

The exact result is a calendar duration, so month length matters. For example, the gap from 31 January 2000 to 1 March 2001 is 1 year, 1 month and 1 day, while the total elapsed time is 395 days.
