How Is GPA Calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course’s grade points by its credit hours then dividing the total by total credit hours. This is called a weighted GPA and ensures courses worth more credits have a greater impact on your overall average.

Formula: GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

For example: Maths (A, 3 credits) + English (B+, 3 credits) + Science (A-, 4 credits)

= (4.0×3) + (3.3×3) + (3.7×4) ÷ 10

= (12 + 9.9 + 14.8) ÷ 10

= 3.67 GPA

The 4.0 GPA Scale

A+ / A = 4.0 — Exceptional

A- = 3.7 — Excellent

B+ = 3.3 — Very Good

B = 3.0 — Good

B- = 2.7 — Above Average

C+ = 2.3 — Average

C = 2.0 — Satisfactory

D = 1.0 — Poor

F = 0.0 — Failing

Most universities use this standard 4.0 scale though some institutions use variations. Always check your institution’s specific grading policy.

What Is a Good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good at most universities. A GPA above 3.5 is considered excellent and may qualify you for Dean’s List honours. A GPA above 3.7 is exceptional and is often required for competitive graduate programmes or scholarships.

A GPA below 2.0 at most institutions puts students at risk of academic probation.
