How Is GPA Calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, adding the totals together, then dividing by the total number of credit hours. This ensures courses worth more credits have a greater impact on your overall GPA.

GPA Formula
GPA = Sum of (Grade Points ร— Credits) รท Total Credits
Example: Maths A (4.0 ร— 3 credits) + English B+ (3.3 ร— 3 credits) + Science A- (3.7 ร— 4 credits)

= (12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8) รท 10 = GPA 3.67 โ€” Excellent

The 4.0 GPA Scale

Most US universities use the standard 4.0 GPA scale. Here's how letter grades convert to grade points:

Letter GradeGrade PointsStanding
A+ / A4.0Exceptional
Aโˆ’3.7Excellent
B+3.3Very Good
B3.0Good
Bโˆ’2.7Above Average
C+2.3Average
C2.0Satisfactory
Cโˆ’1.7Below Average
D1.0Poor
F0.0Failing
๐Ÿ’ก Note: Some universities use a modified scale โ€” for example some institutions do not distinguish between A and A+, or use a different scale entirely. Always check your institution's specific grading policy before using these calculations for official purposes.

Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA

Your semester GPA only counts the courses you took in a single term. Your cumulative GPA is your overall average across all semesters โ€” the figure that appears on your transcript and is used for graduate school applications and honours calculations.

  • One strong semester has more impact on your cumulative GPA early in your degree when you have fewer total credits
  • Use the Cumulative GPA mode in the calculator โ€” enter your previous GPA and total credits to see exactly what your new cumulative GPA will be
  • Most scholarships and graduate programmes look at cumulative GPA not individual semester performance

FAQs

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It measures your academic performance by converting letter grades to numerical points and calculating a weighted average based on course credits.

Semester GPA only counts the courses from one semester. Cumulative GPA is your overall average across all semesters. Use the Cumulative GPA mode and enter your previous GPA and credits to calculate your overall standing.

Credit hours vary by course โ€” most standard university courses are 3 credits. Lab courses are often 4 credits. Check your course enrolment information for exact credit values.

Most graduate programmes require a minimum GPA of 3.0. Competitive programmes at top universities often expect 3.5 or higher. Some PhD programmes look for 3.7 or above.

Yes โ€” especially if you’re in early semesters. The fewer total credits you have the more impact one strong semester has. Use the Cumulative GPA mode to see exactly what GPA this semester would give you.
