How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. To convert in the other direction — Celsius to Fahrenheit — multiply by 9/5 then add 32.

Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Example: (98.6°F − 32) × 5/9 = 37°C — normal body temperature
Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Example: (100°C × 9/5) + 32 = 212°F — boiling point of water
💡 Quick mental estimate: To roughly convert Fahrenheit to Celsius in your head, subtract 32 then halve the result. For example 72°F − 32 = 40 ÷ 2 = 20°C. This is slightly off from the exact answer (22.2°C) but close enough for everyday use.

When Do You Need to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Fahrenheit is used primarily in the United States. The rest of the world — including the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada and most of Asia — uses Celsius. You'll need to convert when:

🌤️
Weather Forecasts
Reading US weather apps or news forecasts and needing to understand what the temperature actually feels like.
🍳
Cooking & Recipes
American recipes give oven temperatures in Fahrenheit — convert to Celsius for UK and European ovens.
🩺
Body Temperature
Some thermometers display in Fahrenheit — convert to check whether a temperature constitutes a fever.
🔬
Science & Education
Scientific work universally uses Celsius and Kelvin — convert Fahrenheit readings for accurate calculations.

Fahrenheit vs Celsius — Which Countries Use Which?

The United States is the only major country that still officially uses Fahrenheit for everyday temperature. A handful of US territories including the Bahamas, Belize and the Cayman Islands also use it. Every other country in the world uses Celsius — making it by far the global standard for weather, science, medicine and cooking.

The Celsius scale was designed to be intuitive — 0°C is the freezing point of water and 100°C is the boiling point. The Fahrenheit scale predates Celsius and uses 32°F for freezing and 212°F for boiling, which most people outside the US find unintuitive.

FAQs

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. For example, 98.6°F − 32 = 66.6 × 5/9 = 37°C. Or just use the calculator above for an instant result.

32°F equals 0°C — the freezing point of water.

98.6°F equals 37°C — normal human body temperature.

212°F equals 100°C — the boiling point of water at sea level.

72°F equals approximately 22.2°C — a comfortable room temperature.

Subtract 32 then divide by 2 for a quick estimate. For example 72°F − 32 = 40 ÷ 2 = 20°C. The exact answer is 22.2°C but this shortcut is close enough for everyday use.

The United States is the only major country that uses Fahrenheit for everyday temperature. The rest of the world uses Celsius as standard.
